Perhaps it’s hardwired into us…

Or maybe it’s just that familiar, salty smell - whatever the reason, there’s something about being by the ocean that makes us want to get outside and get moving.

The briefest outing in Mentone will confirm this. Wake up early on a Saturday morning and watch cyclists whizz by on Beach Road. Otherwise, take a trip to the foreshore to find families strolling with their furry friends, or dedicated joggers pounding the pavement (or sand) before the daily grind.

From AFL to Athletics and almost everything in between, Mentone is a recreational melting pot with an abundance of options for the most dedicated sports aficionados.

●      Mentone Athletics Club

Camaraderie, fitness and fun; these are the three pillars that Mentone Athletic Club builds its culture around. Whether you’re a regular fun runner, or a more serious athlete looking to fuel your competitive fire, Mentone Athletics Club caters to athletes of all ages and abilities.

●      Mentone Bowls Club

Step 1: Forget anything and everything you’ve ever heard or thought about lawn bowls.

Step 2: Enter Mentone Bowls Club. A freshly laid synthetic green illuminated by floodlights. A new way of thinking about the wonderful sport of Lawn Bowls. For competitive bowlers, Mentone Edge have seven pennant teams and host in-house tournaments. Social bowlers, are you in for a treat. If you haven’t heard Barefoot Bowls, we suggest you familiarise yourself. Fast.

For a fun and cheap night out with friends or work colleagues, be sure to lock in Barefoot Bowls. For $10 per person, get down and enjoy a relaxed session of bowling and drinks at bar prices.

●      Mentone Lifesaving Club

A long-standing icon of the community, the Mentone Lifesaving Club is poised right on the foreshore and is a wonderful opportunity to dive into the crisp waters of Port Phillip Bay as well as connect with fellow Mentonians.

For the youngsters, Nippers is a crowd favourite and works to develop kids’ surf skills, sand skills and increase their general fitness and endurance - most importantly within a fun and welcoming setting.

Confident swimmers are encouraged to get involved in the patrolling lifestyle at Mentone LSC. Those who’ve visited Mentone Beach in the summer understand how hectic it can be. With 500 nippers plus day trippers coming to enjoy the scenes, there is a constant need for patrollers at the beach.

Perhaps best of all, every Friday night, members and guests are welcome to come down and enjoy the sunset over the bay.

●      St Patrick’s Tennis Club

Tennis - the ultimate social sport if that’s how you want to play, but also fiercely competitive if that’s your style. St Patrick’s Tennis Club are a family-friendly club with four floodlit synthetic grass courts. Never played, or just want to touch up your backhand slice? The pros at St Patrick’s offer group and private classes for all ages and abilities. If you’re ready to take your game to the next level, join a junior or senior team competing in local Bayside competitions.

●      Mentone Football Club

St Bedes/Mentone Tigers Amateur Football Club is one of the oldest, proudest AFL clubs in Australia. With a vision of being a premier amateur AFL club in Victoria, the Club fields teams in every age group from Under 8s to Seniors - male and female.

The Club is a notable institution within the Mentone community and beyond, and always seeks to conduct itself at the highest level both on and off the field. A club that encourages participation and values its local community.

●      Mentone Clovers Netball Club

The Mentone Clovers are a vibrant junior netball club who take part in a weekly Saturday morning competition in Dingley. Kids aged between 5 and 10 are encouraged to take part in the ‘Net Set Go’ program, while there are teams for every age group between U/11 and U/17.

The club aims to provide all players with an opportunity to enjoy the sport in a fun, inclusive and supportive environment.

●      Mentone X Golf

It’s unlikely we need to remind golf enthusiasts that Mentone is central within Melbourne’s golfing hub. Right in the hallowed ‘sandbelt’, a variety of public and private golf courses are in close proximity to Mentone.

A slightly different approach to the game, X Golf Mentone is changing the face of golf retail in Australia. Incorporating the famous X Golf virtual experience with entertainment, hospitality and retail equipment, X Golf Mentone is the ultimate golfers’ playground.
